Chicago winters can be brutally cold, and for those in need, the season brings even greater challenges. Exposure to freezing temperatures significantly increases health risks—according to a UIC study, 94% of temperature-related deaths are caused by cold exposure.
To address this urgent need, Zakat Chicago launched its Winter Kit Distribution Campaign during the COVID-19 lockdowns, when traditional coat drives became difficult. Our mission was clear: ensure vulnerable communities have access to essential winter gear. Each kit includes a warm jacket, hat, and gloves.
Starting with 2,000 kits in our first year, the campaign has grown steadily. In 2024, we distributed 8,500 winter kits and 2,000 warm blankets. For 2025, we’ve expanded our efforts by adding child-size winter kits alongside adult kits and blankets, responding to requests from our distribution partners.
Together, we’re making winters safer and warmer for thousands of families across Chicago.
Zakat Chicago’s commitment is guided by the timeless teachings of Islam, which emphasize caring for those in need. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
وَمَنْ كَانَ فِي حَاجَةِ أَخِيهِ كَانَ اللَّهُ فِي حَاجَتِهِ،
“Whoever fulfills the needs of his brother, Allah will fulfill his needs.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, 2442)
