Coordination between Zakat-Collecting Organizations

Consistent with its mission of establishing Zakat as a living institution, Zakat Chicago provides additional services that other Zakat organizations do not. These include coordination between Zakat-collecting and Zakat-distributing organizations.
Objectives of the coordination are to provide opportunities of learning from each other and evolving and promoting best practices.
Many organizations seek and collect Zakat in the Greater Chicago area. Masajid, in particular, are trusted with Zakat by their musallies. Zakat Chicago organizes quarterly meetings of the Masajid Zakat Committees. In 2018, ZC held three coordination meetings between Masajid who collect the Zakat. At these meetings, masjid representatives discuss the varying levels of Zakat collection and the challenges every organization feels in distributing the Zakat to those who need it.
Two concrete areas of coordination have been identified:
  • Creating a universal Zakat system for ZC affiliated Masajid: What are the minimum requirements for maintaining records of Zakat applicants and can the application for Zakat given be standardized for affiliated organizations?
  • Zakat Recipients Information: Several organizations felt the need for knowing the Zakat distribution to the same individuals by multiple organizations. This need can be addressed by establishing a shared database that each organization can access.
At the October 2021 meeting, a database developer presented a plan to establish the central database using SalesForce at each of the willing organization and then linking them together. The next steps are to get agreements from the willing organizations.
