Mission & Vision

Mission

The primary mission of Zakat Chicago is to establish Zakat as a living institution in the Greater Chicago area. We endeavor to accomplish this mission by:
Zakat Chicago has also undertaken the collection of Sadaqa and general charity, so as to be able to also meet the community’s needs that are not Zakat-eligible.

Vision

Our vision is centered around our guiding principle of “local collection, local distribution.”  in accordance with a Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (S). By focusing on the most immediate and pressing needs found in our great city and surrounding suburbs, Zakat Chicago is able to ensure that the funds collected have an immediate and noticeable impact on our community

Committee Members

Qadri Abdallah, Chairman

Qadri Abdallah is the current chair of Zakat Chicago and has served the Chicagoland Muslim community in various leadership capacities including as President of Islamic Foundation North (IFN) and Trustee and Chair of its Zakat Committee. Br. Qadri has also served other organizations, such as MCC, ISNS and ICCD. Br. Qadri is a food scientist and is currently the Vice President of Operations at a lubricants/oils company in Franklin Park.

Mohammed Kaiseruddin,PhD

Dr. Kaiseruddin has served the Chicago Muslim community in various leadership capacities for over 40 years, including as the Chairman of the CIOGC and the President of the Muslim Community Center. Professionally, he has a PhD in Nuclear Engineering and is currently retired.

Mohamad Chehade, PhD

Dr. Chehade has nearly three decades of extensive experience in developing nonprofit organizations. He has served in different capacities as board member, director, manager, and consultant at various American Muslim nonprofit organizations. His multichannel fundraising approach has helped nonprofits raise millions of dollars through a variety of mediums.

Mustaque Ali, MBA

Mustaque Ali has been with Zakat Chicago since 2008. He has served as a board member for the Islamic Center of Wheaton and his condominium association. In addition to Ali’s career as a project manager and independent contractor, he has worked as a Sunday school teacher for over 20 years.

Irshad Khan

Irshad Khan has served as President of Islamic Foundation North and has been the CIOGC Chairman since 2019. He is a school board member for District 24 and serves as a board member for Advocate Health Hospital Committee. Professionally, he is Vice President of Engineering & Strategy Deployment at a private equity company in Evanston, Illinois.

Maqsood Quadri, Board Member

Maqsood Quadri has worked with Zakat Chicago for more than 20 years. Additionally, he is President of the Downtown Islamic Center, President of Indian Muslim Relief and Charities (IMRC), and is the Chief Operating Officer of CIOGC.

Salman Mohiuddin

Salman Mohiuddin is a business consultant focusing on IT strategy and digital transformation. He has been active in the development of the Muslim community since the year of 2002 in the greater Chicago community as well as the UAE. He has served as a board member for ISNS and has also worked with the Zakat Chicago in the past. He is also an active student of knowledge learning traditional sciences for over 10 years.

Quadir Khan

Quadir Khan was the first Chairman of Zakat Chicago and served for 15 years. Now a committee member, he has been on the board of MCC and at ISNS, where he was the President for several years. Quadir has also helped translate a book on Tajwid called "Easy Tajwid".

Mulham Katayah

Mulham Katayah has a Master’s in Management Information Systems and helps multiple masajid with their technical systems. In addition to serving as a committee member for ZC, he founded ISAVE Audio/Visual Productions, owns Mocha Café, and works in international exports. Molham is happily married and has two sons.

Sahira Sadiq

Sahira Sadiq has had the honor of serving multiple nonprofits in her 35 years of community work. Respected as a credible voice who offers both traditional and innovative solutions, she has earned a seat at the table wherever she has served.

SHEIKH HASSAN ALY

Sheikh Hassan Mostafa Aly is the Imam and Director of Religious affairs at The Mecca Center in Willowbrook, Illinois. He is a graduate of prestigious Al-Azhar University of Cairo, Egypt in Islamic Studies and Sharia. Currently, he is a PhD candidate in Theology and Adjunct Professor at Lewis University and University of Chicago.

Aymen Abdel Halim

Aymen Abdel Halim brings 20 years of diverse experience in marketing, communications, and public relations experience to his role as Development Director for Zakat Chicago. He has served as a communications and marketing consultant for a wide-range of corporate, non-profit, and educational institutions including the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago (CIOGC), Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), The Mecca Center, Universal Music Group, City Colleges of Chicago, Chicago History Museum, and DePaul University.

Consultation With Scholars

Consultation With Scholars Zakat Chicago consults with Islamic scholars in Zakat Related matters. The scholars frequently consulted are: Sh. Hassan Aly, Sh. Rizwan Ali, Sh. Kifah Mustapha, Prof. Inamul Haq, Ustad Ubaydullah Evans

Partners

Zakat Chicago is pleased to receive support from other organizations, work in cooperation with most of the major mosques in the area and support many charitable service organizations.

FUNDING PARTNERS

In 2022, one of our largest projects was the Winter Kits distribution. To make the most effective use of the Zakat dollars we purchased jackets, blankets and other accessories directly from the manufacturers in China. Muslim Aid USA provided a significant help by picking up the cost of shipping and customs fees for the entire shipment of 6,000 kits from China to Chicago. Thank you Muslim Aid USA!

History & Growth

The History Of Zakat Chicago

1987 – The Central Zakat Committee (CZC) is organized at the Downtown Islamic Center
The Central Zakat Committee (CZC) is organized at the Downtown Islamic Center (DIC) under the leadership of Dr. Yakub Patel, Chairman of the DIC Board of Directors. Brother Ahmed Qadeer is asked to lead the effort. The mission is to centralize the collection and distribution of Zakat in the Chicagoland area.
1991-1992 – The CIOGC is established.
The Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago (CIOGC) is established.
1997 – The CIOGC forms its own Zakat committee.
The CIOGC forms its own Zakat committee. The Chairman of the CIOGC at the time, Dr. Talal Sunbulli, asks Br. Ahmed Qadeer to form an ad hoc committee to lead the same effort inside the CIOGC that was led by Br. Ahmed at the DIC.
2001 – The CIOGC completes an initial project definition of the Central Zakat Committee.

2003 – The Central Zakat Committee is restructured and the mission is re-defined to “institutionalize Zakat in the Greater Chicago area”.

2008 Zakat Chicago was rebranded. The name of the committee was changed from Central Zakat Committee to Zakat Chicago. Its scope and operating principle was rebranded as “local collection, local distribution.”

2011- Raised for local needies $250,000 in Zakat

2016- Raised for local needies $500,000

2019- Raised for local needies $750,000

2021- Raised for local needies over $1M

GROWTH

Alhamdulillah, Zakat Chicago has grown steadily since its inception in both community support and financial strength.
Additionally, there has been a steady increase in the number of community needs being met, as well as the budgets allocated to each need, alhamdulillah.
We intend to continue to increase the number of mosques and centers that are working with us in order to increase the overall number of participating organizations. Our hope is that, through such cooperation, the Zakat funds collected in the Greater Chicago area are distributed in the most efficient manner possible.
We hope and pray and ask you to join in the prayer that Allah (SWT) helps Zakat Chicago grow in its scope and succeed in its mission, InshaAllah.
